Karat Scrap

We process karat gold, silver, platinum and palladium scrap from jewelers, pawn shops, manufacturers and many more. Unmatched excellence and refining expertise along with accuracy has established LGS Refining as a premier refiner.

OUR KARAT SCRAP REFINING PROCESS

Each container or lot received goes through an extensive check-in and sorting process. Materials received are separated, recorded, weighed and individually photographed.

All precious metals are melted in our state-of-the-art induction furnaces. Unlike most refiners who mix karat scrap with simple borax; LGS employs a proprietary flux blend specifically designed to maximize the extraction of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. Our unique flux blend effectively removes the highest amount of impurities.

Borax has traditionally been used by refiners to increase their profit margins, because it traps precious metals in the slag. A separate "refiner's flux" is then needed to extract these metals from the borax. What sets LGS apart is that we use a refiner's flux on each individual shipment. The result? Higher returns for you.

Molten metal and fluxes are homogenized inside our induction furnaces. Pin tube samples are taken from each melt. The contents of the crucible are poured into a mold and are allowed to cool naturally.  The bar is then weighed, sampled and recorded.

The final step in the process is analyzing the samples. The most common analytical process we utilize is a Fire-Assay. We follow strict ASTM guidelines when performing this step to ensure and certify 99.99% accuracy on your results. In addition to other analytical techniques such as chemical analysis, induction coupled plasma (ICP) or atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Contact us to find out more.
